Position Summary: 
The Nurse Educator will oversee perinatal education within the Westside Healthy Start program and be responsible for working with staff to ensure the provision of high quality health education and promotion.. Working with Healthy Start case managers, the Nurse Educator will identify Healthy Start participants in need of additional educational and supportive services. These participants include women with current chronic illnesses, those that have experienced a previous preterm infant or fetal demise, or lifestyle issues that go beyond the expertise of our case managers. The Nurse Educator will provide direct supervision to doulas, breastfeeding peer counselors, and community health workers. In addition, the Nurse Educator will be involved with providing health education in various settings: homes, one-to-one in the clinics, or within Centering Pregnancy groups.
Duties and Responsibilities: 

§ Assess current health education and health promotion activities within the Healthy Start program, identify gaps, and develop plan for improvement.
§ Working with staff, develop and implement prenatal and interconceptional health education program specifically for women who have had a previous poor birth outcome or are experiencing a medically high risk pregnancy.
§ Provide nursing assessment, education and support in a variety of environments, including during home visits, individual visits in a clinical setting, and in groups.
§ Provide supervision to doulas, breastfeeding peer counselors, and community health workers.
§ Be a member of the Healthy Start team and serve as a resource to case managers and other Healthy Start staff.
§ Serve as a liaison between Healthy Start Program and Access providers including OBs, midwives, and LCSWs.
§ Perform other related tasks as needed or assigned.

Requirements: 

- Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Illinois as a Registered Nurse
- Experience working with pregnant and parenting women and infants.
- Must have 3-5 years working in maternal-child nursing in community settings.
- Must have strong background in patient education, be self-motivated with good written and communication skills.
- Experience in developing trusting relationships with clients and working with team members.
- Experience collaborating with community partners and residents.
- Comfortable with making home visits.
- Required ability to satisfy both inner-city travel and on-call requirements.
